River Reeds

River Reeds was a community built for clarinetists in and around Louisville, Kentucky to connect, share, and support one another. It was built for students, teachers, hobbyists, and pros.

  • An (almost) 1 Year Check-In

Hi friends, As River Reeds approaches its one-year mark next month, I’ve been finding myself a little reflective. I keep thinking about all of you who showed up with reeds, cases, curiosity, and a genuine desire to connect. I want to be honest, and I want to be gentle. Since my move, the energy around River Reeds has understandably softened. Life shifts, calendars fill, and without someone physically present to keep nudging things forward, it’s hard for a community like this to sustain momentum. That reality has been sitting heavy with me, because this group was never just a website… [read more]

Middle of my 3rd month of CrossFit and I haven’t lost weight, and I can’t really see any change yet. Quantum Leap

I’m way late watching Quantum Leap, but seeing a nonbinary actor portraying a nonbinary character has been so joyful to see. Last night I made it to S01E12, “Let Them Play.” This episode surrounds a trans basketball player and her struggle with acceptance. It was beautiful. It was a little “teen angst” at times but the message was amazing. There was a scene where Ben (Sam Beckett 2.0) took his daughter to group, and he attended the parents group while his daughter attended the teen group. It broke me. Hearing those parents talk about how they just wanted their kids… [read more]

  • Cleartune

I’m constantly forgetting my tuner at rehearsals. This has become a pain, because I leave it at home on my music stand, then rush out the door without checking. So, I’ve started looking for a tuner app for my iPhone. Cleartune is my app of choice. It’s amazing! This is the best tuner I’ve come across for the iPhone. It’s about $3.99, but I must say that the free ones aren’t exactly what I was looking for. This one has adjustment settings just like an actual tuner. This was also the easiest to use. Read all about it here. [read more]

  • New (School) Year, New Ideas!

Hi everyone! I hope this email finds you doing well. I’ve made it to Maryland and am (mostly) settled in. The house is coming together, work is back to normal, though my clarinet has taken a bit of a hiatus. While I look for opportunities to play in my new area, I’d love to check in and see how things are going back in Louisville. Before I left, a few clarinetists mentioned interest in keeping River Reeds going — and I’m more than happy to help make that happen! I’ll continue supporting the group online by updating the website and… [read more]

    DEI at BSU

Just received Ball State University‘s latest “Cardinal Quarterly” email, and chose to unsubscribe. I also wrote an email back to them in the hopes that it reaches the right people. To whom it may concern, I wanted to take a moment to explain my recent decision to unsubscribe from the Ball State Foundation emails. It’s a choice I make with a heavy heart. I am deeply saddened by the current climate in our country, where leadership pressures educational institutions to choose between maintaining their commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and facing potential funding repercussions. Hey everyone! I just wanted to say a quick thank-you to everyone who came out to the get-together on April 29. We had a nice group, and for the first time we had a bass clarinet! Thanks, Kris Bachmann, for hanging out with us! So, to the task at hand… my move is official. It is looking like mid-June, though a lot will depend on the logistics of finding a house and moving stuff ‘n’ things. I only yesterday had an offer on my house, so things are starting to move in the right direction. With that said, it’s my… [read more]

  • Some Big News

Hey everyone, I have some personal news to share. I’ll be moving in a few months, and while it’s an exciting new chapter, the timing makes it bittersweet. Just as River Reeds is coming to life, I find myself facing an unexpected transition. It’s been a challenge to navigate—trying to build something meaningful while knowing change is on the horizon—but I’m grateful for every moment of this journey. This group has been a long-standing conversation among many of us for over a decade, and I’m thrilled to see it finally come to life. Music has brought us together in so… [read more]

Our government banned TikTok before X, before Truth Social, before addressing child exploitation, before regulating assault rifles… It’s hard not to think about all the other pressing issues our leaders could have focused on instead. If you used TikTok and weren’t aware, American accounts — videos, comments, and profiles — are still visible outside the US. All the ban has done is sever our connection to that content, which is odd considering the main concern of this app was the sharing of user information with a foreign country (it hasn’t gone anywhere). When I voted for Harris, I was choosing a path forward. That choice carried weight, values, and convictions. I voted against hatred, bigotry, homophobia and transphobia, sexism, and racism, because those have no place in a society striving to be better. I voted for a future where dignity and respect are extended to everyone, regardless of who they are or whom they love. I voted for leaders who believe in protecting those rights, who stand up for progress, not regression.
